Retainers

Having your braces removed is an exciting time. However it also signals the start of your retention period. This phase is just as important as the active tooth movement phase in determining the ultimate success of your treatment. Once the teeth are in their final desired positions, a period of time if needed to stabilize them so the surrounding bone and gums can conform to the new alignment.

All orthodontists know that as the retainers are discontinued there may be minor changes in tooth position. We also know that teeth will continually want to move throughout life. Our goal in providing retainers is to limit those changes to the natural process of accommodation.

To best stabilize the teeth, we use upper and lower bonded retainers along with removable retainers typically at night. The length of time these are worn are typically associated with the severity of the problem at the start of treatment, and we will offer you our recommendations at the time these retainers are provided. You will also be provided with instructions on how to care for and clean your retainers.
